Milk Protein Supplement Review
An old favorite for building muscle and losing fat
The supplement industry seems to grow by hundreds of new products on an almost weekly basis. Nowhere is this more evident than with the wide variety of protein supplements available. You have whey protein, egg protein, milk protein, milk and egg protein, and soy protein. Although all will supply protein for building muscle and losing fat, most have different roles to play. Given its rapid absorption, Whey Protein is great as a post-workout protein source. This hour time period immediately after a workout is what’s called a “nutrition window” and you want a protein source that is rapidly absorbed and sent to the recovering muscles. Egg Protein is great as it’s very low in calories and is loaded with vitamins and minerals. Soy Protein is one of the few plant proteins that is complete in that it contains all the essential amino acids (most plant sources are deficient in one or more of the essential amino acids). While not absorbed as rapidly as whey and egg protein sources, soy has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels and contribute to overall health. And it’s still great for building muscle and losing fat.
And then there is milk protein. Milk is ideal as a bed time protein source and here’s why. Milk contains two primary proteins, whey and casein. As we saw earlier whey is rapidly absorbed, but casein has a slower rate of digestion and absorption. Think of it as a time-release protein. The whey will be used almost immediately, while the casein will slowly be digested and released into your system as you sleep. So even though you are in bed your body is still in a great state for building muscle and losing fat.
Many bodybuilders shun milk as they consider it too high in fat. This may be true for whole liquid milk, but not the latest milk protein powders. The better products have most of the “bad” fat removed. What’s left are muscle-building MCT’s (medium Chain Triglycerides). Not only are MCT’s linked to protein synthesis and immunity system boosting, but they have also been shown to increase calorie burning.
As with whey and egg protein supplements, milk protein supplements usually come in numerous flavors including chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and banana.
